To control carpenter ants the nesting site must be located and treated. In the case of carpenter ants the nest might be in a wall or an attic or in a tree near the infested structure. It is often necessary to drill and inject areas inside structures to flush carpenter ants and stop the destruction they can cause. Since carpenter ants are nocturnal it takes some skill and experience to find these nests. Baiting for carpenter ants works if the nest is in an accessible location. An indication that you have an infestation of carpenter ants is their presence in your kitchen as they forage for food.  They do not eat wood like termites, they hollow caverns in the wood to build their nest.
